A bone density test can quantify your risk for osteoporosis. Bone density is greatest at age 30, and drops slowly from that point. Bone loss rapidly accelerates at menopause, leading to height loss, vertebral fractures and back pain. There is also increased risk for hip fractures and wrist fractures. Other factors that can lower bone density are smoking, having infrequent periods due to excessive weight loss, steroid use, alcohol, and low calcium intake.

Who should have a bone density test?

  • all men and postmenopausal women under age 65 who have one or more additional risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • all men and women age 65 and older regardless of additional risk factors.
  • any history of an adult fracture.
  • postmenopausal women who sustain a fracture.
  • men and women who are considering therapy for osteoporosis if bone density testing would facilitate the decision.
  • women who have been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT/ERT) for prolonged periods.
  • family history of osteoporosis.

Bone density testing is done in the office using a state of the art body scanner. Testing takes less than half an hour, and measures bone density in the hips and spine. It is painless, simple, and comfortable. Following the test, you are given results by one of our physicians. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call our office staff.
